08/17/12.. 3 p.m. Moscow time… I can honestly say I’ve been waiting for this day.
The first time I ever heard about the Pussy Riot girls was after I came back to my home in Murmansk, Russia after visiting the United States this Christmas. I can’t say they made a good impression on me. I mean with a name like Pussy Riot, how could I have thought of them in any way seriously.
In March this punk-rock group of young women with not much talent conducted an unauthorized concert in a popular orthodox church. They sang a prayer that Marry would rid Russia from Putin (the president of the Russian Federation). I’m not stupid and know very well that the votes for him were forged. Just about everyone in Russia knows that! So obviously there are many who are discontented in the fake democracy we live in, most aren’t happy but are too afraid or indifferent, many are just ignorant, a lot get there money and that’s all they care about. Those young women decided to take a stand. None of them hate the orthodox church. In fact in they’re all from that very church. But they are being sentenced to 3 years, 3 YEARS of jail based on the accusation of hating the church.
What they did is hooliganism. They didn’t hurt anyone, they didn’t break or steal anything.
I’m not rebel, but I can’t agree with people being deprived of their freedom, being forced from their families to be locked away for years just because they expressed their opinion in the best way they knew how to.
The only reason the government is making such a big deal about what they did is so that the people of this country will fear them, believing ourselves to be small and insignificant, owing the them for bringing us out of the Soviet Union. Somehow even though it’s just a series of awesome books I can’t help but see a likeness to the situation described in the Hunger Games.
I Believe in God and by the last speech those young women gave, I know they believe in Him too. If they have broken the law they should pay a punishment equal to the crime. But no one not even the head priest of the orthodox church is at right to convict them of hating God. That is between Him and each of them individually.
